COVID-19 Update | June 1, 2020

Dear Residents, Family Members, and Friends of The Village:

May is in the books. Here in June, it is appropriate to continue to recognize the health care workers who work tirelessly to provide patient and resident care during this pandemic. This includes the wonderful employees here at The Village living out our mission of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ to all those we serve.

Last Wednesday, May 27, the San Antonio Fire Department provided COVID-19 testing to DeMatel residents and the employees who work in that area. In addition, a representative with the Texas Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) was present during testing. A total of 52 residents were tested and 149 employees. The results of the test are pending.

Residents living in The Village’s independent living, assisted livings, and memory care were not tested because the Governor’s order was specific to nursing facility residents and staff.

I apologize for having stated in my last letter that the Mayor’s Stay at Home order expired on May 19. I had called the Mayor’s office on the afternoon of May 19 and was told that the order would be expiring. In the 11th hour, it was obviously decided that the order would be extended to Thursday, June 4.

There is confusion around the Governor’s easing of restrictions and the San Antonio/Bexar County Stay at Home/Work Safe orders. This confusion most often plays out regarding visitation.

As a reminder, the restriction on visitation to The Village’s assisted livings, memory care, and extended care is ordered by HHS and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).  HHS works in tandem with CMS so hopefully here in June, those two bodies provide a specific timeline for easing restrictions on visitation. For now, visitation continues to be restricted except in cases where a resident is dying. Under that circumstance, up to 2 family members may visit a loved one.

Independent living visitation continues to be restricted until the Governor eases that restriction during Phase 3 of reopening.

In all areas, the Village’s Resident Services Department is happy to schedule virtual visits or window visits.

The Village Executive Team continually monitors the temporary rules and regulations around COVID-19 and will promptly share any future changes.

We are excited to announce that we have opened our beauty salon in Gabriel House to independent living residents. Salon services are currently available via an appointment.  No walk-ins. Residents may call extension 935 to schedule an appointment.

Here at The Village, we pray daily for an end to this pandemic as we look forward to fully opening our doors and welcoming back our extended family and friends. Thank you for your continued support and prayers for The Village at Incarnate Word.

Most sincerely,

Paul Harrison
