COVID-19 Updates | December 5, 2020
December 5, 2020
Dear Residents, Family Members, and Friends:
December will undoubtedly be a difficult time given the surge in COVID-19 cases we see here in San Antonio as well as across the Nation.
The Village is currently experiencing an outbreak of COVID-19 in our Angelique House memory care.
We have notified Metro Health and Texas Health and Human Services. In addition, we are following the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on managing COVID-19 in a memory care unit as it is a unique challenge with residents suffering from cognitive decline. The virus’ incubation time of 2 to 14 days also creates a challenge. When a resident with COVID-19 or asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection has been identified, other residents on the unit may have already been exposed or infected. This necessitates on-going weekly testing until at least 14 days have elapsed since the last positive resident was identified.
All staff within the memory care unit tested negative. Residents and staff on the second floor of Angelique House assisted living all tested negative.
During our last round of surveillance testing, Alphonse House assisted living residents and staff all tested negative. In DeMatel Extended Care all residents tested negative; however, one staff member tested positive. That staff member is home isolating. If and when the Bexar County positivity rate goes above 10%, DeMatel Extended Care will be required to test staff twice a week versus our current requirement for once a week testing.
In our licensed areas nursing staff have done, and will continue doing, daily assessment of residents for symptoms. While our positive memory care residents are currently experiencing mild to moderate symptoms, if a resident begins to experience severe symptoms, the family will be notified and the resident will be transported to the hospital.
The Village’s positive cases reflect the surge in cases here in San Antonio. We urge everyone to continue to take every precaution possible including wearing a mask, social distancing, and washing your hands often.
Please, feel free to call the community with any questions. My extension is 140. You may also ask to speak with Jeanette Eisenmenger, The Village COO (extension 157), or Lynda Jennings, The Village VP of Clinical Services and Compliance (extension 213).
Thank you for your continued cooperation, support and prayers, as we strive to fulfill our mission of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ to all those we serve.
Stay safe and well,
President & Chief Executive Officer
